Lower & Middle School
Music The music program is culturally relevant, varied, and engaging. The curriculum is based on the Massachusetts and National Standards for Music Education, and the approach to teaching is informed by the Orff Schulwerk, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, and Kodaly methods. Instruction focuses on creating experiences for the children that will encourage and nurture a love of music and provide opportunities for children with diverse strengths and learning styles to shine. The curriculum across grade levels includes singing, movement, instrument instruction, and listening to, creating, and reading music. The music curriculum is geared to each developmental level so that children will be able to participate with interest, confidence, and engagement. Large and small performances provide opportunities for the students to share their work. In the early grades, children are engaged through familiar themes, simple movement, and songs. Later, as children begin to develop greater confidence, understanding of music, and participation skills, they are challenged with new material, rhythms, and concepts. Instrumental instruction moves from simple to complex as motor skills develop and understanding of rhythm increases. Voice instruction progresses from group singing in grades K-2 to rounds in grades 2-4 and partner songs and simple part singing in grades 3-5. |
